GOLF

I’ll be the first to admit it: before I started working with a particular client, my knowledge of golf was limited to "it seems like a nice way to spend an afternoon". I didn't get it. But after diving into the world of greens and chipping through the lens of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, I have developed a massive appreciation for the sheer mental grit and precision this sport requires. It turns out, golf isn't just about the clubs, balls and holes. It’s about what’s happening in the six inches between your ears.

The "Subconscious Saboteur" on the Green

Golf is perhaps the ultimate test of the Intellectual Brain vs. the Primitive Brain. You can spend thousands of pounds on the best clubs and hundreds of hours with a pro working on your grip, but if your primitive brain decides that the 18th hole is a high-stakes life-or-death situation, your body will react accordingly.

When we get stressed—perhaps after a bad slice or when we see a particularly daunting water hazard—our "Stress Bucket" overflows. Our primitive brain takes over, sending shots of adrenaline and cortisol through our system. For a golfer, this is a disaster. It leads to:

  • "The Yips": Those tiny, involuntary muscle spasms.

  • Over-thinking: Trying to consciously control a swing that should be fluid and subconscious.

  • The Spiral: One bad hole leads to a "here we go again" mindset that ruins the rest of the round.

Creating the Mental Blueprint

This is where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) comes in. We don’t spend hours analyzing why you hit it into the trees three years ago. Instead, we work with the subconscious to clear out what’s getting in the way and build a Blueprint for Success.

Through the power of visualization and trance, we can:

  1. Lower the Baseline Stress: By emptying your "Stress Bucket" off the course, you arrive at the first tee with a calm, focused mind.

  2. Rehearse the "Preferred Future": In a trance state, your brain doesn't distinguish much between a real event and a vividly imagined one. We "practice" the perfect follow-through, the calm putt, and the resilient recovery over and over again.

  3. Bypass the "Inner Critic": We quiet the part of your brain that wants to narrate every mistake, allowing your muscle memory to actually do its job.

It’s Not Just for Pros

Whether you’re aiming for the Masters or just trying not to lose six balls in the woods every Sunday morning, SFH helps you get out of your own way. It’s about moving from Survival Mode (dreading the bunker) to Performance Mode (seeing the line and trusting your body).

I may still not be able to tell a 7-iron from a 9-iron without looking at the numbers, but I do know this: a calm brain hits better shots.

NOTE: Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a Collaborative Process

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand, it is a partnership between therapist and client. While I am confident in the results we could achieve, it's important to understand that they are impacted by how open to the process and committed to change you are.
